Dr. Mitchell holds a PhD in Administration of Justice from Texas Southern University. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Departments of African American Studies and Criminology at The College of New Jersey. He previously worked in corrections and law enforcement in Texas, and now uses his platform as a criminologist to center the voices of system-impacted individuals and reform-minded criminal justice professionals to effectuate change in the criminal legal system. Dr. Mitchell’s research focuses broadly on the experiences of returning citizens, the impact of incarceration on families, critical policing, and justice-involved youth. He is an advocate for the decriminalization of drugs in New Jersey, and is currently engaged in public education efforts in support of decriminalization in the Garden State.
